Random Pokémon Facts — The Sea Lion Show That Made Samurott

[Josh and Rowan: recorded by the host.]

Host 1: Okay, you guys. One of the Unova starters only exists because of a lucky detour. To a sea lion show. I'm serious. Sea lions. this is random Pokemon facts. I'm Josh it's Saturday so it's origins and creators today is all about how Pokemon got designed so the designer is Yusuke Omura he was working on Oshawott the otter starter and he went to see real otters because he says he can't draw without seeing the real thing.

Host 1: The team was stuck on Oshawott's evolutions. Just making an otter bigger and standing it on two legs seemed boring. But near the otters he came across a sea lion show the sea lions were so strong that they gave him the idea for Oshawott's final evolution Samurott.

Host 1: And get this he designed Samurott first and then worked backward to Oshawott. All three Unova starters final evolutions stand for a different culture. Samurott is a Japanese samurai, urai, Serperior is a European knight and Emboar it's Jungfei a general from an old Chinese novel called Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Host 1: Ken Sugimori said they chose Japan the West and China because the people of Unova come from lots of different backgrounds.

Host 1: Serperior was modeled on a knight like Lady Oscar from the manga The Rose of Versailles and the team felt Dewott was a real samurai once it could pull the shell off its stomach and use it as a weapon. Here's another Unova one Darumaka and Darmanitan a new Game Freak designer went to a festival with Japanese Daruma dolls are round hollow good luck charms in Japan they stand for never giving up and the dolls at that festival happen to look like gorillas so the designer got an idea a fire type gorilla shaped like a Daruma doll that's so random I love it story two Audino the pink helper Pokemon it was partly made for the anime Ken Sugimori figured the show would switch to all new Pokemon for black and white so he worried who would stand next to Nurse Joy So he designed a new helper a bit like Chansey Sugimori said Audino started as a request for a cute Pokemon and a designer named Sayaka later said she created Audino along with Galvantula Aromatisse and Gumi wild facts speaking of Chansey Happiny and Chansey tie for the lowest base attack and defense of any Pokemon just five each but when Happiny evolves into Chansey its HP jumps by 150 points that's the biggest single stat jump from evolving and Guinness World Records names Pokemon the best selling media franchise ever about 147 billion dollars as of April 2024 around 102.9 102.9 billion of that came from merchandise like toys and plush not the games riddle time an artist made a whole set of tiny clay Pokemon it said a Guinness World Record for the smallest handmade Pokemon sculptures the smallest one is a Voltorb about the size of a pinhead so how tall is that clay Voltorb two millimeters two centimeters or two inches okay ready two millimeters tall two wide and too deep tiny that's the show for today tomorrow is Sunday so it's legends myths and mysteries I can't wait be here see you tomorrow bye this was Josh
